This page is an exhibition of my process and the making of my senior thesis film at the Cleveland Institute of Art in order to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Soundtrack by my amazing brother, Alexander Labut!
Heavily inspired by early to mid-2000's slapstick cartoons that inspired me personally at a young age. The simple, textured backgrounds of some were also referenced when settling on the final look.
I looked at Ohio farmland, specifically beef/pork farms, and abandoned meat-packing plants for my research. I wanted to work in a setting closer to home.
Jealous, prideful, and pampered, but protective deep-down. Memoo is stubbornly against the new addition to her home but comes around once she realizes that he needs her support, like an older sister/guardian.
Cute, naive, adopted younger brother type. Extremely trusting and loves Memoo unconditionally despite her attempts to push him away. I added the subtle inclusion of spots to connect him visually to Memoo.
Strong silent type. Based off of Eustace Bags and Jigen, two characters that rarely show their eyes, to add to his stoic farmer look and hint at his darker intentions.
I wanted a clear visual difference and feeling between each location: farmhouse is warm, cozy, and inviting. Farm land is bright and expansive. The meat packing house is threatening, stark, and as red as its weenies.
Below are the page spreads from my process book with further details and reflections on the film during its different stages. Feel free to read at your leisure.
